How one man monopolised creativity for a month

December 8, 2016

Movember – a great idea and a great cause.

But whereas most men merely grow a moustache for the month, one of our team members went quite a bit further. Greg Martin, a designer in the Galliard team and owner of his own clothing brand, became the Monopoly man for the month, travelling to each of the 30 different locations on the Monopoly board and producing a unique piece of art at each one.

From working with a mime to create a cinemagraph in King’s Cross station to asking 15 estate agents in Angel Islington to draw self-portrait sketches, the resulting artworks vary widely but share one thing in common – collaborating with others.

“It has been a hugely humbling experience,” said Greg. “So many people have kindly given their time to this project and it has really shown me the power of simply asking for help. I came up with this crazy idea and reached out to family, friends, colleagues, other artists, members of the public to make it happen. And the answer was emphatically ‘yes’. I believe the best and most exciting work is produced collaboratively, and this whole experience has been a testament to that.”

Greg cites Fear of losing – a video and rap based on asking members of the public: “What are you most afraid of losing?” – as one of his favourite pieces, mainly due to how open and sincere his interviewees were. On the last day of the challenge, Greg even found himself in jail – although just visiting – as Wormwood Scrubs prison afforded him an interview and creative session with one if its prisoners.

Go back to Old Kent Road

The final result of the Monopoly challenge – after hundreds of hours of work, more than 110 collaborators, and not very much sleep for Greg – is 30 incredibly diverse pieces of art, which will be on display in a gallery back where it all began – the Old Kent Road. Full details are below – please do go along and take a look!

And finally, this is not just an artistic endeavour but a charitable one too. If you would like to donate to the Greg’s Movember Foundation page, please do so here – thank you!
